Panic Rooms
What about them?
Panic rooms are also referred to as safe rooms and as the name implies once you get inside you are generally safe from most threats.
Safe rooms are nothing new and have been recorded for hundreds of years, most ancient castles had a safe room to protect the royal occupants from harm, many of these had secret tunnels that allowed the people inside to escape, tunnels were dug into the landscape with an exit that was far enough away and so well hidden that the escaping occupants were able to make it safely to another location.
These days panic rooms can be anything from a simple reinforced door in a large closet up to elaborate bunkers designed to allow you to be safe and still enjoy the comforts of home. Would you like a mini bar in your safe room?
Panic room features
Depending on your budget and needs your safe room can have whatever you feel is necessary.
Power
On the high end your panic room will have a self contained generator properly vented to the outside. On the lower end hand cranked lights and phones may be enough.
Air circulation
On the elaborate side a safe room will have airtight doors and a separate filtration system and will be temperature controlled, on the other end a simple venting system with a hidden intake and outtake will suffice.
Surveillance
A monitor inside the room with hidden cameras set in useful places will allow you to see and describe to police who is in your home.
Communication
Plumbing
Depending on your budget a toilet and sink would be useful if you were to be in the safe room for a long time.
Food and water
Bottled water and some food would help keep an occupant more comfortable, figure on one gallon a day per person.
Panic rooms can be as simple or elaborate as you want. When you build your room contact an experienced builder who has done these before and you might want the contractor to sign a security agreement ensuring confidentiality. A panic room is not something you want everyone to know about.
